RTPP

Often, a horse, or a child, has behavioral problems that are difficult to deal with. Too often these horses and children are labeled "BAD" with no understanding of why they display such behavior. Through working with horses, understanding how they think and feel, we have discovered that in most cases, the problem is communication, or lack thereof.

Horses have a reason for everything they do. We have learned that, to have a healthy relationship with a horse, you must both respect and trust each other. Thus, our philosophy of treatment is also based on trust and respect.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

EAP is a short term, collaborative effort between a therapist and a equine professional. The RTPP therapy program was originally developed to provide an equine-based experience to strengthen traditional psychotherapy sessions for high-risk youth with various behavioral disorders. The clients were referred by the juvenile justice system and local school districts in San Miguel County.

A therapist from our clinical team works with the client during an EAP session. The therapist is able to observe critical behaviors and process them as they emerge. The EAP sessions offer a common avenue of experience between the client and the therapist and lead to important areas of problem solving.

Since its beginning, in November, 1997, the RTPP therapy program has grown rapidly to service not only high-risk youth, but at-risk youth and families as well. The horse is a natural mediary for clients and family alike. Many of the families we serve talk about the loss of the ranching lifestyle that was a part of their heritage for generations. Horses seem to fill a void in these families and remind them of their cultural roots. By first working with the client, we have been able to engage other family members in the treatment process as well. Family therapy with an equine base is becoming more in demand as time goes on.

Our Founders

President and Co-founder of Ride To Pride Partnership, Inc., Greg Esquibel, has taken years of self-discipline from playing sports and his knowledge of troubled adolescents, gained through his experience as Horsemanship Director at a residential treatment facility, to instill compassion and discipline into his teachings. Executive Director and Co-founder, Lorraine Esquibel, has brought her years of study and experience in horse psychology, and in a unique methodology, uses them to mirror the behavior of her young clients. This enables her clients to recognize their own behaviors within their horses, thus beginning the critical step of understanding themselves and others.
Together with conventional therapy, Greg and Lorraine have created a very powerful and effective program that, using a base of trust and respect, greatly improves their client's self-concept.
